OMG! THE WORLD WILL END!
Nah, just repair permissions after, if it works anyway then it doesnt really matter about doing it before. Just make sure you do it reasonably regularly to keep your Mac a happy Mac.

I print to an Epson SC 777 with no driver installed all the time. I just clicked that icon with the printer and the ?, and clicked Add. Works fine.

Why don't you search eBay completed auctions instead of having people guess here?
Exactly.
Also bear in mind as with all auctions it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at close of sale and on eBay that usually means as little as possible. ;)

This years comic wasn't their best stuff, but it was still a decent effort. Here is their 2008 and 2009 versions. Sony didn't get a comic last year...

Hi, I'm doing some research into the 10.6 OS I've come across two pieces of seemingly conflicting documentation.
In the Network Services Admin 10.6 PDF (http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/Network_Services_Admin_v10.6.pdf) on pages 23-24 I'm reading "Mac OS X Server uses the xinetd process to manage many UNIX network services, such as FTP, finger, and so on. xinetd listens for requests on specific TCP/IP sockets and is a secure replacement for inetd. However, because xinetd does not handle RPC services well, inetd and xinetd are included with Mac OS X."
But Apple TN2083 (http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2005/tn2083.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS10003794) says "Starting with Mac OS X 10.4, inetd and xinetd daemons are deprecated in favor of launchd daemons; a launchd daemon can specify a list of TCP and UDP ports to listen on as part of its property list file. Starting with Mac OS X 10.5, inetd and xinetd daemons are no longer supported. However, it's easy to run an existing inetd or xinetd daemon by creating and installing a simple launchd property list file (resulting in an inetd-compatible launchd daemon). For an example of this, check out /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/finger.plist."
Can anybody shed some light on this? I have a feeling the TN is correct, but it would make me sad to find out that Apple's own server documentation is out of date. I'd attempt to poke around in the system myself, but sadly I can't afford a copy of 10.6 server. Lion can't come fast enough!
Thanks in advance for any info anybody can provide.

Yeah so I ran TU and it was only able to save for 4.3. Can anyone think of a reason to jailbreak 3.2.2 and save those to Cydia before going up to 4.3? I'm trying to think of any possible reason why I'd want to go back to 3.2.2. At this point, it seems like everything 4.3 offers is better. And I have to believe that an untethered jb will happen eventually...
Do you have the camera connection kit or do you plan to get it? The connection kit only really fully works with the non 4.0 versions...

I visited the Apple Store in Westfield White City yesterday (5th August 2010) to find out about and purchase an ipad. Once I had found an assistant to help me (the very excellent Dan), I was happy but my initial experience on entering the store was not a happy one. There were a number of people milling around but it was not overly crowded. Despite that, I was left for a while to stand aimlessly. After a few minutes a very bright and breezy female assistant approached me and helped with a technical query I had concerning my iphone. I then asked about ipads and she promised to find an assistant for me. She found Dan who was already serving a customer. Unfortunately he then disappeared. I waited....and waited....and waited and eventually had to make what I can only describe as a "public announcement" to all and sundry that I'd appreciate some help and that "I don't bite" :)
By this time I was pretty annoyed.
Eventually Dan helped me - he was really excellent and as a result I purchased a 32MB ipad which I am finding really great!
32mb is pretty small storage space :P

Hi, I am trying to help someone that is a newbie on a G5 Tower 10.5.8 who wants to watch some avi films.
I only started with a MBP when I bought my recent one 1.5 years ago.
Before that i was on windows and could fix most things but i am unfamiliar with Macs of that age.
I was telling him to download VLC assuming he had a newer one until he told me the error message, that his architecture wasnt right, at which point i asked him for his OS number and discovered how old it was.
Bearing in mind i am dealing with someone who has very little tech experience, I dont want him to get frustrated which he will easily do so I want to check my facts before passing them on to him.
I understand VLC had an issue with 10.5.8 if I read this page and do another quick search on Google.
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=82230
So I may have to tell him to download a compatible VLC and hopefully at worst lead him through he fix on this page to get it working.
If anyone is familiar with this and can offer advice beforehand, I would be grateful.
Otherwise, is there another program that plays .avi formats on an earlier Mac, such as 10.5.8, preferably one that doesn't have to download codecs.
I want to make this as easy as possible for him.
If any other such programs can be used, please let me know what they might be
TIA

For what you want to shoot, the nature and still stuff, a tripod is more important than IS. Keep in mind that IS only stabilizes the camera, and not the action. My feeble brain reminds me that dressage is a horse competition thing. To freeze the action, you need a fast shutter speed. IS will help a bit with this, but clean action shots of moving things are achieved with shutter speeds above 1/500 second. More like 1/1000 for jumping horses.

Like many of you I have installed an SSD as my main boot drive with a spinning disc for large file storage.
I am experiencing some issues on how to organize my files.
I want to keep documents, downloads etc on my SSD. I want to move my music, pictures and movies folders to my HDD. THe problem is my mac won't let me delete the music, pictures, movies folder on my SSD saying OSX needs it.
How do I convince OSX that those folders will be in my other drive from now on?
I guess I could move my hole home folder and make new "documents" and "downloads" on my SSD but I am looking for a more elegant solution.
thanks in advance.
P.S. also microsoft word updates wont work, gets stuck looking at both HDs and won't let me choose one for installation. what is going on there?

Thanks, but it needs to be 2.0 since it will have a hard drive, iPod nano, and PSP hooked up to it.

And what's with this paying for incoming minutes thing? The payment should be the responsibility of the person doing the calling. At least, that's how it seems to work over here.
Seems to work like that in Europe, i guess. If I call someone in France for instance, then they have to pay at least some of the incoming call.
In the UK the caller pays for the call which seems the sensible way of doing things.
I do get dropped calls, here, though, but's that's 'cause I use a cheap-ass Pay as you go card with Virgin, who piggy-back on to other networks, it sems. But not often, it has to be said.

Thanks for the reply :)
I've just found the problem in the site definitions (as you say) there is a button in the advanced area that says "links relative to" with the choices "document" and "site root". I clicked site root and started again and when I made an external css file it has the same dialogue to click. This solves it.
Now i've just got to get fireworks to do the same now
Thanks for the help
David

The stock market is benefitting from AAPL. I think the revision of AAPL's influence on the market will be reevaluated again.
