I tried resetting both, but nothing happens.
Hopefully the new motherboard will do the trick. If not, it seems that I'm out of luck. Frick.

G5 Powerbooks aren't coming out time soon, while the heat output of the 970 has been somewhat alleviated by the 970FX, the system controller chip still produces a large amount of heat; removing it or using one operating a lower speed would defeat the point of using a 970 anyway. I expect the G4 powerbooks to hit 1.5 Ghz before the switch to the G5.

Now this is looking different. I'm not sure why this would have changed. The finder windows are clear.

Also, the CPU keeps running between 30-90% even though there are no applications running (other than activity monitor). Related or no?

The only applications that might use this are military applications. Which are most likely classified applications. But in short, no, a normal application wouldn't use it. ;)
In my line of work there are a *lot* of Apps that will happily gobble that CPU power, memory, or both. NAMD (http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/namd/) will eat the CPU and ask for more, as will portions of Amber (http://ambermd.org/). NWChem (http://www.nwchem-sw.org/index.php/Main_Page) is another hog there, etc.
(Of course I don't *usually* run these local, the system I just ran a NAMD job on is a "small" cluster of 2u dell boxes with 4-way 12 core AMDs and 2GB/core for 48 core/96GB Mem per machine, 14 nodes total, but I do run them local for testing and small jobs...)
Not normal usage for most perhaps perhaps, but not military, and not out of line for use on a "pro" machine....

Is there a benefit to having fonts activated and deactivated on the fly?
yeah, so you don't have to put the fonts you want to use in user/library/fonts by hand, like citizenzen and you recommended.
but i agree, what citizenzen added, that there's more important stuff to take care of than solely choosing the typeface. but for organisazion, overview and samples the fontexplorer comes in handy.
at least it does for my work.

I just purchased the base model 27" last night and had the same query. A friend confirmed that if only using for photo/video editing, 512mb is enough, RAM upgrade is more important which you can do in future.
So the GPU btw 512mb/1GB doesnt make alot different ?
I think to get MarBookPro add RAM to 8GB (more portable usage for travel)
13-inch: 2.7 GHz or 15-inch: 2.0 GHz ? (main for H.264 & Photo edit) AdobeCS5/FCP/LR/AP3
pls advice.

i'm using the font explorer from linotype.
http://www.fontexplorerx.com/
there's a free version, too. which was quite sufficent for me at home. at the studio i'm using the pro version.
and in combination with indesign, it activates and deactivates the fonts you're using in each file automatically.
generally it's quite useful.

I thought I read (in one of these threads somewhere) where someone had stuck it on a PowerBook and it was faster then it had been before the upgrade.
I might try it on my wife's iMac G4, just for kicks. I haven't upgraded it at all (it's still on Jaguar) so it might be an interesting time.
Anybody going down to Ft. Worth next weekend? :D

I'd take a P&S if you don't have a good camera on your phone. We went to Disney World in September and used my iPhone 4 FAR more than even our Canon P&S because I could snap photos and video and immediately upload them to Facebook and email them to family that wasn't with us. They loved getting shots from us on the go and I liked not having to do that stuff later when I was exhausted.
Also, I highly recommend taking at least one backpack to put sunscreen, water and snacks in. Disney World does allow food to be taken in now so I also recommend taking lunch some days as eating there every day is expensive.
Have fun!

Both the i5 and i7 ($1999 and $2199 models) are very powerful and will still be "future-proof" many years down the road. Sure, Intel will always be releasing new, faster processors at cheaper price points, but you'd never buy if you were always waiting. Barring any hardware issues, the iMac will still work just as good as day one.
It is usually a good idea to buy a little more than you need now so you don't feel inhibited down the road. If you are working with video files, the i7 will be faster as it offers Hyper-Threading, so there are eight virtual cores, and the Turbo Boost is faster (3.4GHz vs. 3.8GHz). The upgrade ($200) might not appear worth it now, but 3-5 years down the road it'll still be powerful, and it'll cost just a few more cents per day.
I don't game, but the 2GB upgrade is a minor cost in the long-run and again, may be beneficial if you want to add additional displays (two Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort). I am sure more demanding games will be able to utilize the extra RAM, although many people have been using less than 1GB for many years.
I'd say the CPU upgrade will be more beneficial, but you have to judge whether you game enough currently that you'll find the 1GB to 2GB upgrade useful. Of the total price of the iMacs, a $300 upgrade (between the two) and spread out of a number of years makes sense.
As usual, upgrade RAM third-party (whether after getting it or down the line), which will give you better performance. 16GB and 32GB upgrades are compatible and they will just become more affordable as RAM prices continue dropping. I hope this helps.

Incorrect. Turbo boost is "dynamic overclocking". Depending on the current number of cores being used and if additional processing power is required, the CPU will slowly increase the clock rate for the currently active cores. It'll do this incrementally until the thermal operating limit of the processor is reached.
Umm, isn't that pretty much exactly what I described in my OP? Albeit I didn't use the phrase "dynamic overclocking".

The only reason I have two partitions is because of the Panther beta - I didn't want to install it over Jaguar and then go through hell to get it back again if Panther was too buggy (which it is).

Can anyone who bought a iPad 2 AT&T 3G version who also has an iPhone 4 confirm that the microsim from the iPhone4 can be switched with the iPad 2s microsim to "borrow" the Internet data?
I know it was possible with iPad 1, not sure with iPad 2. Thanks.
