I'd guess that we'll see a move to Lithium Polymer batteries first (though two lithium polymer batteries never hurt anyone)

It works without the Internet. When connected to the non-Internet network, do you see the little WiFi bars in the status menu and/or does the iPod get a proper IP address?
Yes I get the quarter round radiating bars plus a tick to the left of the network name. It actually seems to be staying with it now and not wandering off as it sometimes does.
As for IP address I have gone for a static one same as I did for the router that works - chose a slightly different actual IP address on the same subnet. Everything else the same as for the other router - not that it should matter - gateway, DNS etc should be irrelevant.
And if I ping the subnet it does recognize and ping itself

It would be better if Apple concentrated on getting IPTC metadata stored in the picture file itself and made iPhoto aware that IPTC comments etc. actually existed. currently Mac OS X and iPhoto are somewhat retarded in their ability (i.e. inability) to handle this type of info.
I certainly would find that more useful than Google maps integration.

Or make a deal with your neighbors and share their wireless network.
Excellent.
Cut-out the under-the-table deal that the manager may have with the sole provider.
(Except that you spelt neighbours incorrectly. This guy's a Brit.)

my 3GS is having more and more issues. battery life goes down, touchscreen is getting less responsive/less precise. I hope it holds up for a while.
If not I can get either:
- the rumored white iPhone 4 end of April
- the rumored iPhone 5 end of September
- the rumored iPhone 6 in 2012
nice, every few month a rumored replacement for my 3GS:rolleyes:
That's not your phone. It's the crappy 4.3.xx software!

Well, as I said before, this isn't iphone against consoles, this is iphone against other handhelds. We should be comparing games we'd expect to play on the handheld devices.
Of course console is going to be better. If we are talking about playing at home and not needing portability, of course the console is a better choice than any of the handhelds.
You're comparing apples to oranges here. You may not be interested in handheld gaming, but that is what is relevant to this discussion, not console gaming. The iphone and other hand helds really aren't competitors to consoles, they serve a different purpose really.
Well then in that light, when it comes to FPS or Platforming gaming, I'll stick to a dedicated handheld with buttons/joy stick. And based on the Engadget story I posted earlier, it seems a lot of other people will too. For a mind numbing good time, I whip out the old iphone for a game of Ball Roll DX

Would that be possibly that Apple is trying to patent as many as possible user interface/method so that no one can get anything closer to the REAL video iPod?
I think that's a much more likely possibility. It's smart to patent anything you invent, even if you have no intention of using it for anything.

There are some sites that let you download music. You could try the further network link (http://mp3.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=mp3&zu=http%3A%2F%2Ffurthurnet.com) .Quote from site, "The Furthur Network is the first and only 100% non-commercial, open-source, peer-to-peer network of legal live music created by fans for fans!" I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to now.
allofmp3.com is temporally not accepting PayPal so unless you want to give your credit card info to a russian site I'd give it a week or two

I can understand people's impatience with Apple for not having a complete AppleWorks replacement already, but if you look at their long term plans for iWork it makes perfect sense. If you start out with a solid foundation it is easier to make improvements so follow my thinking:
"iWork '03"
Keynote 1
iWork '05
Keynote 2 - improvements
Pages 1 - introduced and is a cross between a word processor and a page layout program. Handles the basics of both well but lacks "pro" features
iWork '06
Keynote 3 - improvements
Pages 2 - gets table cell formulas, sorting, number formatting (preparation for spreadsheet app), comments (colaboration), thumbnail view (page finding, ordering, deleting), address book support (mail merge), endnotes, automatic text correction, and general improvements to features already there.
iWork '07
Keynote 4 - improvements
Pages 3 - gets modes which separates word processing tasks/items from page layout tasks/items (reduced clutter), ability to create custom formulas.
Spreadsheet 1 - can import/read Excel data, save as/export to Excel file, basic reporting, there will be a way supply the charts in Keynote and Pages with data, plus whatever Apple adds
iWork '08
Keynote 5 - improvements
Pages 4 - word processing and page layout tasks are improved to the point where they are looking like two separate apps
Spreadsheet 2 - general improvements, reporting feature gets most improvement by being able to "drill" down through pie charts.
iWork '09
Keynote 6 - improvements
Pages 5 - improved to the point where it is only a word processor now.
Page Layout 1 - "New" app that has broken away from Pages and is now the "iApp" of DTPs. This could happen in iWork '08.
Spreadsheet 3 - Gets ODBC support
Database 1 - most likely SQLite, or equivalent, with a sweet front-end. Hopefully, it will be a true RDBMS and not something like what came with AppleWorks.
Reports 1 - (ie Crystal Reports) This is a stretch but if not a separate app then more of an "engine" that is used by the spreadsheet and database apps.
I do not use Keynote which is why I only entered "improvements" next to it.

Yes with Game Center this has the chance at competing with 360 and PS3/steam etc and now that Unreal engine is ported to the iOS Gaming on the i Devices have no where to go but up.

Did you miss this from the article???
"The 3G network will be complemented by UMA, which lets phone calls transition between cellular and Wi-Fi to enhance indoor coverage. But we'll only see "market trials" of UMA this year, according to Dotson"
Last time I heard 'Market Trial' was ITMS on a Mac.......

I like the new design, though it's very much information indeed. What I really miss is the news preview. I could see before, if it's worth to look at "Page 2", because the newest article was shown. Now, I will have to take a look.
Edit: Oh, I just saw, that I can see it on the left side, so forget about it.

If a word processor can even be dumbed down, it's been poorly designed... Pages is my wp of choice now for just about everything. I find Word too noisy-- I have never used more than half the functions in Word (even after putting in a good effort to "learn to use them effectively").
I agree with the crowd that thinks compatibility is important. There's two levels of compatibility though-- functional and superficial. If they can make it functionally compatible with a reasonable subset of Excel functions, then it will be enough for me to use and share files.
There are times though when superficial compatibility is critical-- where it needs to print and format on another machine just the way you wrote it. I run into this problem with Keynote-- I can export something to Powerpoint to use as a starting point for cleanup, but it's rarely presentable straight from export.
right on ms word gives me a headache. i go from pages to word for phys class and it takes me longer to do it in word. iwork is good but it could be better. numbers will be welcomed addition, now i don't have to use excel

This is good but they need to be better about how they treat the developers. The also need to figure out how to better organize the app store. They should have a wishlist and reccomendations.

Also, I'm considering getting a 17" MBP (soon, I'd like to wait for a refresh but the money isn't coming out of my personal coffers); what is your feeling about it pumping out HD content to a 30" ACD? The ACD would actually be for home use with the MBP. How does it perform pushing HD content?
Thank you kindly!
if i may piggyback onto this question, as i'm in the same boat currently.
given dante's comments about the color inaccuracies of non-ACD monitors (like the HP specifically), I'm wondering whether the built-in mon on the 17" hi-res is accurate?
i'm planning to upgrade out of both a 2.0 coreduo MBP and dual 2gig G5 PM into a single 17" 2.6/8 hi-res MBP and add a 30" monitor to that for home use. If the 17's internal monitor is respectably accurate for printwork, obviously I'll be able to save a few sheckels on the 30" by going HP (enclosure elegance be damned); on the other hand, if the 17 is not accurate it'll make more sense to spend the dough on an ACD.
your thoughts appreciated!

im thinking of queueing up on thursday too. What time does it open? I have never queued for something on launch day before. Is it likely to be a HUGE queue? Will they sell out of iphones in hours? Can I reserve before hand?
Thanks in advance for help.
Joe
p.s. Also do you know if orange stores will be selling the iphone on pay as you go and have them in stock from thursday? Also if I was to buy one from vodafone on pay as you go(I know a guy in the shop), would it work on orange?
I'm not sure whether to go touchwood solihull. I haven't reserved but was hoping to get a 16gb white iphone 4....what are my chances?

I am interested in purchasing the iWork suite, in particular for Pages, however I have a query and would be very grateful if anybody could provide assistance. I know Pages supports the import and export of Word documents but am curious as to how well implemented this function is? Exporting accurate, error free word documents which may be viewed in perfect working order by users of Office for Mac and Windows would be a necessity and I'd like to know how well Pages does this job?
Thank you for your time.
My exports appear fine, but I have not tried exporting anything containing heavy formatting, images, etc, just standard multi-page essays with minimal frills.

How about plug the ethernet straight into the iMac?
Seems really odd that both the TC and Express would have this problem at exactly the same time.
Maybe give Apple a call.

Here's all you need to know Mcrain... a hardened weathered old-time farmer works his entire life, pours his blood sweat and tears into paying off his family farm, paying income tax on every cent he earned and property taxes on every square foot of land every single year... yet when he passes away and per his request, his farm passes to his only son, the government decides that they didn't bleed enough out of him. Before his son can have the farm, he must first sell off half of it to the highest bidder in order to pay off the tax man ONE MORE TIME.
It's a tax on accumulated (and previously taxed) income... period.
It's a new tax on the new transfer of the accumulated (and previously taxed) income. Big difference. (edit) Oh, and I already know plenty about the subject. Good try though.
(edit 2)
Fundamental misunderstanding... drives me crazy.
First, the estate tax is not a new tax, but an alternative to what would happen without the estate tax. What? Huh? Confusing? Ok, if you eliminated the estate tax, then there would be no tax at the estate level, but there would also be NO amount of the transfer exempt from taxation, and every heir would be required to include every penny they receive and declare it as ordinary income and pay a tax on that at whatever tax rate they are at. On the other hand, the estate tax simplifies the filing, provides a five million dollar exemption, and doesn't require heirs to mess with the paperwork.
Here's a wiki article you might like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estate_tax_in_the_United_States
