Thanks for the tip and yes, that's exactly what I did. Macbook Air has a tiny hard drive and I was running out of space. I will need to buy another 1TB hard drive to backup my TC going forward!
Ah, the air..yes and hard to upgrade to a bigger drive if i remember right. its unfortunate but yeah if its going to be a storage drive then you should back the storage drive too.
I'd back up your music off your iphone ASAP. One cant have enough backups.

It's not that I have an innate fear of soldering :) the task indeed sounds fairly straightforward and from a rational perspective very little can go wrong but there is just something about connecting 2x $500 SSD's with a cable that underwent some DIY soldering that does not sit too well with me and I can't really test it with a cheapo PC first too as that does not have any backplane cables that have male SATA DATA/POWER header.
It's a better connection than using crimp connectors, and is how your expensive electronics are manufactured (all the components are soldered to the PCB). ;)
Soldering wire isn't as common as crimp connectors due to costs (more labor intensive to solder, as well as more expensive materials and equipment is used).
I believe I will instead purchase the kind of cable you posted a link to and stay away from soldering or using nuts and crimp connectors. It probably won't turn out much more expensive either as I won't be needing that SATA Y splitter, but a regular widely available 2xSATA power that connects to molex will do with a cable like in link.
Either way will work, so it's up to you (soldered version isn't quite as messy IMO).
Also have found this one, but it's 1m long! No info on how long the one in your link is too.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1m-Hard-Disk-SFF-8482-SAS-Cable-29P-1-SATA-7P-Cable-/130468432498?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e60864a72#ht_645wt_901
The one I linked was 0.5 meters. You cannot go over 1.0 meters in total cable length with SATA drives, so please keep that in mind (the signal voltage is weak, and anything longer causes stability problems).
And this one, but it has 2x SAS connectors on the main female header so I doubt it will be compatible with the backplane connection cable on the Mac Pro.

Thanks. I was was confused by the number of postings on the internet I saw which kept referring to folks saying they're using launchd now since "there is no xinetd in SL anymore" and so on. I assumed that meant it had been taken out entirely and replaced with launchd.
I'm still not entirely sure the PDF isn't wrong, though. It mentions FTP and Finger specifically as two services that use xinetd, which means they should have entries in /etc/xinetd.conf and/or /etc/xinetd.d/<service>, right? Only my 10.6 workstation has nothing like that. I do, however, have .plist files for both of those in System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ - unless the server is using xinetd while my desktop is using launchd, but that doesn't seem right.

What the heck are you talking about?! Aren't you feeling Mike Jones and 50 Cent?! :p
At the moment I'm really into MF DOOMs stuff, Masta Ace's 'A Long Hot Summer' and 'Disposable Arts', and Common's Be and Resurrection.
I really need to listen to ATCQ more, haven't given Midnight Marauders a spin in a while :(
Ofcourse I love 50 Cent and Co. I mean who could resist the irresistable charm of Fifty and his insightful lyrics about uhhh..........uhhh.....the club?
Yeah, underground is pretty much all that's remained of hip hop. Mf Doom has some really creative/weird material. Not really my taste but very unique nonetheless. Immortal Technique is one of the artists I've recentley gotten into.

crap!
I have one of these too, and I was going to sell it as of this week, but recently (like Saturday) I started using it again and I LOVE it. It makes iTMS videos look awesome when played full screen in iTunes. Just make sure to change the resolution to 1024x768 NTSC in system prefs to get the full effect.

Are you serious?
Whether it was meant seriously or jokingly, I think the comment was out of line. The folks who do the jailbreaks use and give their skills and time without any real desire for reward. After reading similar and even worse comments across multiple forums, I'm surprised the jailbreakers even continue their work.
It's grown into something for too many that's an expected entitlement through near demand instead of something that's eagerly awaited through patience.

Speculation that it could be tomorrow at noon:
http://is.gd/mkDK1L
Hopefully it comes out soon!
What a news story. Closest the "article" comes to a source is "supposedly".
Why would he release a jailbreak for 4.3 tomorrow when 4.3.1 is imminent? A vulnerability was found publicly at pwn2own that needs to be patched by Apple. Burning another vulnerability would be dumb. Sorry, just sayin'. It's not gonna be tomorrow.

Thats basically what Charlie said on his twitter, which is that the exploit doesn't work on 4.3
No the website that the guy was kind enough to provide says something a little more subtle. And if that source is reliable, Apple ought to release 4.3.1. It says the exploit itself fails, but the vulnerability still remains, whatever that means. My guess is they are suggested the exploit could be updated to work on 4.3. The threat is not been permanently closed.

I'm puzzled as to why you chose 1.1.4 to restore with, Is that the last one you had when the ipod was working? There is a 1.1.5 which is the last release of 1.x, also there is 2.2.1 which is the last 2.x, and there is 3.1.3 which you have to buy for $5 in iTunes before you can install it.
What state is the ipod in now when you turn it on? Apple logo, or Connect to iTunes? Or blank screen?
If it was me I think I would buy the 3.1.3 for $5 and try to update to it. Here is a link which will open iTunes to the page where you can buy it:
https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage
Use this on the last computer where you successfully synced the iPod. iOS 3.1.3 is the currently supported highest update for the Gen1. If it didn't work I would take to an Apple Store Genius Bar and tell them "Hey, I paid $5 for this 3.1.3 update and it didn't work, can you fix it?" Depends on whether you're willing to risk the $5 and have an Apple Store handy.

My question is, is it a worthwhile upgrade? or is it just better to leave it with the 2.4ghz and get a better hard drive.
Great question. Unfortunately you don't provide any information that would help us advise you. Since you're asking the question, it probably makes no difference at all.

I know the recording industry are a resistant and mercenary group of individuals, but how much $$$ would they want for just the lyrics, considering you have bought the song already?
That is right where it gets messy. The labels generally don't hold the rights to the lyrics, and the rights needed to get lyrics and sheet music aren't quite the same ones needed to use a song in a recording. :(

Pages on my G4 ibook and even on my G5 dual 2ghz with a gig of ram is ridiculously slow - like molasses. If this spreadsheet program is this slow I will never use it.
I will give double emphasis on that!!
I tried to produce a nice document in pages for a set of astronomical objects in a viewing manual. It is roughly 55 pages long and includes 110 different figures.
It was an absolute nightmare to put together! I spent days locking, unlocking, moving, re-organizing, trying to get pages to do some of the simplest of tasks properly.
In the end, I have a nice looking document that takes literally 5 mins to open, 10 secs to scroll a page, and I am afraid to touch it, to edit it, as it might "explode" if I do.
I have a PB G4 17in. 1.67Ghz, 1 GB ram.
I really know that most of the people here are mac fanatics when they actually endorse "Pages". It is the slowest, worst, piece of cr*p Apple ever produced. I have the UB iWork 06 version now and it still sucks!
I like keynote but it still lags in presentation features behind powerpoint. It is also a problem to interact with the 99% of business users out there who use PP. I know that it exports to PP and I know it goes to pdf, QT, etc. But you have to actually perform these operations with an actual group of business users to realize the probelms it presents.
9 times out of 10, exporting to PP screws up everything but the most elemental of slide shows. QT exports don't quite look presentation quality, are dificult to interactivily control, and generate huge files that are difficult to email.Exporting to PDF, makes static slides, and is more for printing than for presentation. There is no free Keynote client for windows and mac users like there is for PP.
All in all, iwork , (still a cheap name), is not ready for primetime. It is OK to experiment with, play with, and to generate simple documents. But it is not any kind of a replacement for the professional who works in an integrated MS office environment.

Yep. That is why the viphone did not sell through... Verizon customers have lots of excellent choices when it comes to smart phones. No question if you are using a late model top tier android device like the dx it is Painful going back to a viphone. Add to that real 12Mbit plus downloads only on Verizon and only on android phones and apples offerings are not even in the game.
The viphone kills in video conferencing though....
I agree.
Tho I really wonder who is using Facetime? I know everyone talks about it like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's like the webcam on my mac, yeah it's nice to have when I call my mom across the country, but it's something I'd use about 0.01% of the time, and if I were going to use it, it's more likely I'd tell my mom to get on the computer and skype me on my computer to have full screen HD video chat...

Interesting read here. With the Superbowl approaching, I always like to hear the other news surrounding the game. This is about the power of a Super Bowl ad and how some sponsors have done post-air. Check it out (http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/2011/02/02/48838/is-a-super-bowl-ad-worth-3m-ask-godaddy):
Since its first Super Bowl ad in GoDaddy has gone from single digits to nearly 50% of market share in domain-name registry. On average, the site says, it has picked up 5 percentage points of market share within the first 48 hours after a Super Bowl ad. It posted almost $1 billion in revenue last year.
The attraction for advertisers is playing to an audience of about 100 million people all at once. The 68 spots were sold out by Fox in October, an indication that companies are more eager than ever to appeal to the masses. Last year, some spots remained unsold until six days before kickoff.
Please feel free to link similar Super Bowl news you find interesting.:)

Sorry to hear that. I really liked the Zune HD interface but MS never created something like the iTune Store. I have seen it in the wild at the university and the interface was actually nice and did things that I wish the iOS would do.
The Zune HD was sweet looking but MS really dropped the ball when they did not put effort into games on it. What I find strange is they are killing the Zune but bringing out a phone interface that mimics the Zune .
You would think that they could integrate the Zune HD their Phone 7 and Xbox to make something like what Apple has done but NO:rolleyes: that would be just way to out there for MS.
Pretty sure the windows phone 7 team is the zune team. Music players are kind a waste of time now days since just about everyone has a cell phone along with most being capable playing music.
